Setting up and managing Identities in Outlook Express

Identities are used when you have two or more server based e-mail accounts. You will not need to use identities if you have a web-based e-mail address such as Hotmail or Yahoo.

Setting up Multiple Identities

  1. Start Outlook Express by double clicking on the Outlook Express icon.
  2. Set up your main account as described on your instruction sheet.
  3. After your main account is set up click on the File menu, click on Identities, and Add New Identity
  4. In the New Identity dialog box type a name for the Identity (the users first name is probably the best choice) then click OK.
  5. In the Display Name box, type the name you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.
  6. In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for the account you are using, it is your secondary account @brigham.net Example username@brigham.net, and then click Next.
  7. Our mail server is a POP3 server, which is the default so don’t change this. Type mail.brigham.net in both the Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server boxes. Click the Next Button
  8. Type your secondary account name in the Account name box. (Do not include @brigham.net). Type your password in the Password box. Verify there is a checkmark in the save password box. If it is not there click on it to change it. Click OK and then Finish.
  9. Follow steps 3-8 for any additional accounts.

Managing your Identities

Outlook Express will automatically open to the Main Identity each time it is opened. To switch to another identity:

  1. Click on File, and then Switch Identity…
  2. In the switch Identities dialogue box click and highlight the name of the identity you would like to open, then click OK
  3. The identity will open and begin downloading mail.
