Connecting to BrighamNET with Dial-up Networking in Windows 95 98

Before you begin close all programs and any windows that you my have open on your computer.

A. INSTALL DIAL-UP NETWORKING

1. Double Click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

2. In the My Computer Window look for a Dialup Networking Icon. If it IS there skip to the Next Section, B. ADD THE TCP/IP PROTOCOL

If it IS NOT there follow the rest of the instructions in section A to install it.

3. Go to the Control Panel (Click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel)
4. In the Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
5. In Add/Remove Programs, click on the tab marked Windows Setup.
6. Click on the component named Communications and then click on the button marked Details...
7. In the Communications window, check the box just to the left of the component Dial-Up

Networking.

8. Click OK in the Details... window then click OK in the Add/Remove Programs window.

9. Microsoft Windows may ask you to insert your disks or cd to copy the needed files and then you will

need to restart the computer for these changes to take effect.

B. ADD THE TCP/IP PROTOCOL

1. Go to the Control Panel (Click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel)
2. In the Control Panel, double-click on Network.

3. If TCP/IP IS listed then skip to Step C.
4. If TCP/IP IS NOT listed In the Network window then click on the Add... button.

5. When Select Network Component Type appears, click on Protocol and then click Add....
6. In Select Network Protocol: Click on Microsoft under the Manufacturer column on the left side.
7. Click on TCP/IP in the Network Protocol column .
8. Click OK button to complete the addition of TCP/IP.

C. CONFIGURE DIAL-UP NETWORKING FOR brigham.net

1.
Double-click on the My Computer icon
2. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.
3. Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.
4. In the Make New Connection window, type brigham.net as the name of the computer to dial.

5. If your modem doesn't show up in the Select a Modem field, select it then click on the Next button.
6. Enter brigham.net's modem number --.or 723-8008 or 279-8846 then click on Next.
7. Click on finish and an icon named brigham.net should appear in the Dial-Up Networking folder.
8. Single Click on the brigham.net icon then select properties from the file drop down menu.
9. Click the server types tab.

10. Remove the checkmarks from Logon to Network, NetBEUI, and IPX-SPX Compatible
11. Click the TCP/IP settings button
12. Click the button next to Specify name server addresses
13. Set primary DNS to 206.71.93.1
14. Set secondary DNS to 206.71.93.2
15. Click the Ok button to close the TCP/IP settings window.
16. Click the OK button to close the Brigham.net properties window.

D. DIALING in to BrighamNET
1.
To dial in to brigham.net, double-click on the brigham.net icon

2. Verify your login and password are correct
2. Click on the Connect button to dial brigham.net.
3. Once the connection is made, minimize the window and start your web browser or email program.

E. TO LOG OFF

1.
Double click the icon with 2 small computers in the lower right corner of your screen.
2. Click the Disconnect button.

Setting Up Outlook Express to access your brigham.net E-mail.

  1. Start Outlook Express by Double Clicking the Outlook Express Icon.
    (If the setup wizard starts then jump to step 4)
  2. In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools pull down menu.
  3. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the Add button, and then select Mail.
  4. In the Display Name box, type the name you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.
  5. In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for the account you are using, it is your login name followed by @brigham.net Example username@brigham.net, and then click Next.
  6. Our mail server is a POP3 server which is the default so don’t change this. Type mail.brigham.net in both the Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server boxes. Click the Next Button
  7. Type your login name in the Account name box. (Do not include @brigham.net). Type your password in the Password box. Verify there is a checkmark in the save password box. If it is not there click on it to change it.
  8. In the Internet Mail Account Name box, type a name to identify the mail account you are configuring. This is known as the "friendly" name for the account. Click Next. Outlook Express 5 will not ask for this information.
  9. Click the connection type that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click Next. NOTE: This step does not apply to Outlook Express 5. Click "Use my phone line to connect," you are prompted to either create a new Dial-Up Networking connection or use an existing one. If Dial-Up Networking has been configured for your ISP, click "Use an existing dial-up connection," click the name for your Dial-Up Networking connection in the list, and then click Next.
  10. Click Finish.
